Monaco Luxury Sunlounger Set in Pearl on a terrace

Sun Loungers for Terraces & Rooftops, Not Just Pools

Key takeaways

  • Sun loungers aren't just for pools: roof terraces, solariums and large balconies are popular places for them in Spain.
  • Measure carefully: a full-length lounger needs around 2m of length plus space to walk past.
  • Roof terraces are often windier than ground level, so store cushions when it's breezy and secure or move loungers in strong wind.
  • Plan shade, as roof terraces often have none.
  • Our sun lounger sets start at €498 (Monaco Sunlounger Set), with the Bruges, Miami and Monaco Luxury sets and the Monaco Daybed also available.

Sun loungers work brilliantly on roof terraces, solariums and large balconies, not just around a pool. Many Spanish apartments and townhouses have a solarium or roof terrace that is perfect for relaxing in the sun, reading or watching the sunset. The keys are choosing loungers that fit the space, positioning them for sun and shade, and planning for wind.

This guide covers how to do that. Browse our full range on the sun loungers collection page.

How much space do sun loungers need?

A full-length sun lounger needs around 2 metres of length. For example, each lounger in the Bruges Sun Lounger Set measures 199cm long, 81cm wide and 52cm high. Also allow:

  • Walking space: around 60cm beside each lounger so people can get on and off and walk past.
  • Space for a side table or drink between a pair of loungers.
  • Clearance at the back if the backrest reclines.

Mark the footprint on the floor with tape before you buy. On narrow balconies, a single lounger set parallel to the railing usually works better than two side by side.

Where should loungers go on a roof terrace?

  • Follow the sun you want: notice where the sun falls at the times you'll use the terrace, such as morning coffee or late-afternoon reading.
  • Face the view: sea, mountains or rooftops make a solarium special.
  • Use walls for shelter: a spot beside a parapet or wall is often less windy.
  • Keep clear of drains and doors: leave access to drainage points, roof hatches and stair exits.

How do you deal with wind on a rooftop?

Roof terraces and high balconies are usually more exposed to wind than gardens, and coastal areas can see sudden gusts. To keep everything safe:

  1. Bring cushions in when it's windy and at the end of each day.
  2. Move or secure loungers against a wall in strong wind.
  3. Close and secure parasols whenever the wind picks up, and never leave one open when you go out.
  4. Check the forecast before going away.

How do you add shade to a roof terrace?

Roof terraces often have no natural shade at all. Options include:

  • A parasol: our parasols start at €269. Always use a base heavy enough for the size of the parasol.
  • A bioclimatic pergola: our 3m × 3m and 3m × 4m pergolas have an adjustable aluminium slat roof. On a roof terrace, check with your community of owners and town hall before installing any fixed structure.

What else should apartment owners check?

  • Access: make sure the furniture will fit through the lift, stairwell and terrace door.
  • Community rules: some communities have rules on what can be placed on roof terraces, especially shared ones.
  • Floor protection: check the furniture feet won't damage waterproofing or tiles.
