Key takeaways
- Winter in much of Spain still brings sunny days, so the aim is to protect your furniture, not pack it all away.
- Give everything a thorough end-of-season clean: frames, table tops, cushions and parasol canopies.
- Wash cushion covers where the care label allows and dry them fully before storing.
- Use the weather covers included with our Bruges, Annecy and Monaco sofa sets during rain, wind and long periods of non-use.
- Close parasols, clear pergola gutters and secure lightweight items before winter storms.
Getting your terrace ready for winter in Spain means cleaning your outdoor furniture after the summer, storing cushions somewhere dry, covering furniture during wet and windy spells, and checking parasols and pergolas before winter storms. Because much of Spain still enjoys bright winter days, you don't need to put everything away: a little preparation keeps your terrace usable on good days and protected on bad ones.
Here's a simple checklist to work through as the clocks go back.
1. Clean your frames
- Brush off dust, leaves and sand.
- Wash aluminium frames with warm water, mild washing-up liquid and a soft cloth.
- Rinse well if you live near the coast, to remove salt residue.
- Dry with a soft towel. Avoid abrasive pads and harsh cleaners, which can damage powder-coated finishes.
2. Care for teak and table tops
- Teak arms (on our Bruges and Annecy ranges): clean gently with mild soapy water and a soft brush, working with the grain. Untreated teak naturally weathers to a silvery grey; that's cosmetic and doesn't affect strength.
- Sintered stone tops (on the Monaco 1.1m dining sets and Monaco sofa set coffee tables): wipe clean with a damp cloth. Sintered stone is non-porous and highly resistant to stains, scratches, heat and UV.
- Aluminium tables: wash as for the frames.
3. Wash and store cushions
- Check the care label. Bruges and Annecy cushion covers are machine washable at 30 degrees.
- Dry covers and cushions completely before storing; damp cushions are the main cause of mould and mildew.
- Store cushions in a dry, ventilated place such as a garage or storeroom, using breathable bags rather than sealed plastic.
- Keep one or two cushions handy for sunny winter afternoons.
4. Use your weather covers
Our Bruges sofa and dining sets, Annecy sofa sets and Monaco sofa sets come with a weather cover. Use it:
- during rainy spells and strong wind;
- when you're away for more than a few days;
- on furniture you won't use for several weeks.
Always make sure the furniture is dry before covering it, so moisture isn't trapped underneath.
5. Close and store parasols
- Clean the canopy with mild soapy water and let it dry fully.
- Close and secure parasols whenever it's windy, and at the end of every day.
- Store parasols closed and covered, or indoors, if you won't use them over winter.
- Check bases and fixings before the windy season.
6. Prepare your pergola
- Clear leaves and debris from the slats and gutter.
- Check that rainwater drains freely.
- Wash the aluminium with mild soapy water.
- Close the slats during storms and heavy rain; open them on sunny winter days to let warmth in.
7. Secure the terrace against wind
- Move lightweight items, such as side tables, cushions and plant pots, to a sheltered spot.
- Stack or group sun loungers against a wall in exposed areas.
- Check the forecast before you go away.
8. Make the most of winter sunshine
Keep a small, sheltered seating area ready for good days: one sofa set or a pair of chairs in a sunny spot, a couple of cushions and a warm throw. On bright winter afternoons, a terrace in Spain can still be one of the nicest places to sit.
