Christmas Lunch on the Terrace: Planning a Festive Meal Outdoors in Spain

A festive lunch outdoors is one of the pleasures of living in Spain. On bright December and January days, many terraces in Murcia, Alicante and along the Mediterranean coast are warm enough at midday for a long Christmas, New Year or Reyes lunch in the sun. When is it warm enough to eat outside over Christmas?

Midday is your best chance. Plan the meal for when the sun is on your terrace, typically early to mid-afternoon, and move inside as it drops. Nochebuena dinner on 24 December and Nochevieja on 31 December are usually too cool for most people to stay out long after dark, so lunch on Christmas Day, New Year's Day or 6 January (Reyes) works better outdoors.

Which Miami dining set suits festive gatherings?

How much space do you need?

Allow roughly 60cm of table edge per person and 75–90cm behind each chair so guests can sit down and get up easily. With the Miami Extending table at 215cm, that comfortably fits three people down each side and one at each end: eight in total.

A festive lunch checklist

1. Check the forecast a few days ahead and have a plan B indoors.
2. Position the table in the sun at lunchtime; in winter the sun is low, so shade falls further than in summer.
3. Shelter from the breeze: a wall, hedge or the side of the house makes a real difference.
4. Bring out cushions and throws for the chairs and keep a few blankets to hand.
5. Use outdoor heaters only as the manufacturer directs, well away from cushions and decorations.
6. Extend the table just before guests arrive, and close it again afterwards.
